Meet Brenna Gomez, class of 2009

brenna_gomez_colorado_college1 - What was your major/minor at CC and where are you from?
I was an English: Creative Writing major and a Feminist and Gender Studies Minor. I graduated cum laude and with Distinction in English: Creative Writing.
2 - What did you like most about the block plan?
I loved the ability to focus on things that you love in unexpected ways. There is nothing like studying Michelangelo in Italy with an amazing group of people. Standing in front of the art, or having the school rent out the Vatican for two hours so our class could be alone in the Sistine Chapel, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. When you see what the colors look like in real life instead of on a slide, it opens up new doors of learning. Being able to leave campus for a month to do that… well, you just can’t do that anywhere else.
3 - What is a Colorado College Public Interest Fellow and what is your role at the Women’s Resource Agency this summer?
CC created the PIFP program approximately 7-8 years ago. This past application season was the most competitive one they have had yet. The school does the first screening of applicants and then sends 3-4 very qualified finalists to the agencies for interviews. Each agency is a non-profit either in Denver or Colorado Springs. Some of the programs last 12 weeks, others are 12 months. The PIFP fellows are meant to learn what the non-profit sector is like and help to begin meaningful, systemic change. Here is the link to the PIFP webpage in case you would like more detailed information: www.coloradocollege.edu/PublicInterest At the Women’s Resource Agency I am focusing on advancing the public policy and advocacy agendas, while also advancing our community relations.

Encaustic Reception at Smokebrush Gallery in Colorado Springs with Daisy McConnell

Encaustic Closing Reception at Smokebrush Gallery - May 29, 2009

Daisy McConnell is a talented local artist, the assistant curator for the IDEA Space, and a Colorado College graduate. I’m the owner of 720MEDIA and a fellow CC grad, and I thought it would be fun to bring my camera and capture some footage from the night. I originally met Daisy during the website and email marketing project we designed for IDEA Space, and I’m excited to see more of her work. Visit IDEAspace and 720MEDIA.

We could all use some good news.

Posted April 18 by Connie Dudgeon

The college has not been immune to the hard economic times sweeping the country in the last year.  We’ve lost programs, sports and some very good people.  It has been traumatic for students, faculty and staff.  Like anyone else in this environment, those who remain are grateful to have our jobs, and almost all of us are adjusting to increased work loads and stress.  We are doing the best we can, from President Celeste to every program staff assistant, facilities crew member, professor, or support professional.  And we know all of you are going through very much the same things in the community, and you are doing the best you can, too.

Let’s hope our friends and colleagues who have lost their jobs this year will be re-hired in new jobs soon, and let’s use our own networks to help them.

Let’s support and encourage each other, and look for the genuine glimmers of good news and work well done.

Here are a couple of “good news stories” for both Colorado College and the city of Colorado Springs.

CC was late to sign on to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, but we made sure that when we did it, we did it right.  As American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment spokesperson Lee Bodner says, “President Celeste and his team have not only done their homework – they’ve earned extra credit. By doing such extensive advanced investigation and planning, Colorado College is farther ahead in fulfilling the terms of the Commitment than almost any other school in the country.”

Colorado Springs was late to embrace our Diversity Forum and its “Everybody Welcome” celebration, but once the community got behind the effort,  it’s grown in leaps and bounds.    CSDF officers and volunteers submitted a grant application in which  “Everybody Welcome” was judged #3 among community diversity projects nationwide.  That’s a wonderful surprise in a city often known, rightly or wrongly, as a hotbed of intolerance.  To learn more about our fantastic Diversity Forum, please click here:  http://www.cospdiversityforum.org/

best to all,

Connie
